The  CSIR NET (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Eligibility Test) is a prestigious exam in India conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for Lectureship/Assistant Professor roles in Indian universities and colleges.

 

What is CSIR NET ?

CSIR NET exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of CSIR for science subjects, including Mathematics. Eligibility for CSIR NET Maths

 

Educational Qualification

  • For General/OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates: A candidate must have an M.Sc. or equivalent degree/Integrated BS-MS, BS-4 years, BE/B. Tech, B. Pharma, or MBBS with at least 55% marks
  • For SC/ST, PwD candidates: A candidate must secure 50% marks in the qualifying degree.
  • Candidates who are in their final year of M.Sc. or equivalent programs can also apply on a provisional basis, provided they complete the degree with the required percentage within two years.

Nationality

  • The candidate must be an Indian citizen to apply for the CSIR NET Exam

 

Age Limit

 

The age criteria for the CSIR NET Mathematics exam differ for JRF and Lectureship:

  •  Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): The maximum age limit is 28 year as of the prescribed date in the notification of that year.
  •  Age relaxation of up to 5 years is provided for SC/ST, PwD, female candidates, and 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer).
  •  Lectureship (LS)/Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for this position. Candidates of any age can apply as long as they meet the educational qualifications.

Who Can Give This Exam?

  •  Candidates with an M.Sc. degree in Mathematics or a related field (as per the educational qualification above).
  •  Students in the final year of their Master’s degree in Mathematics or related fields.
  •  Engineers (BE/B.Tech) and candidates from related fields like Physics, Statistics, or Computer Science who have an inclination towards Mathematical Sciences are also eligible.
  •  Candidates who are passionate about building a career in academia as a lecturer/professor or who wish to engage in advanced research in mathematics.

 

How to Apply for CSIR NET Exam?

 

1. Visit the official website: Go to the NTA or CSIR NET official website.

2. Registration: If you are a first-time user, click on “New Registration.” Fill in the basic details like name, contact details, and email ID to generate your login credentials.

3. Fill in the Application Form: Log in using your credentials and fill out the application form with personal details, academic qualifications, and exam center preferences.

4. Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of your photograph, signature, and other necessary documents like proof of identity and educational qualifications in the specified format.

5. Fee Payment: Pay the required application fee online via net banking, credit/debit cards, or UPI.

6. Confirmation: Once the fee is paid and the form is submitted, download and print the application form for future reference.

CSIR NET Examination Pattern

CSIR NET Exam for Junior Research Fellowship and Lecturership Eligibility is a Single Paper Test with MCQs. The exam can be divided into three part

  1. Part A – This section will have 20 questions covering General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. Candidates must answer any 15 questions. Each question will be worth two marks. This segment is of 30 marks total out of 200.
  2. Part B – This part will have 40 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) generally covering the topics given in the syllabus. Candidates must answer any 25 questions. Each question shall be of three marks. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 75 out of 200.
  3. Part C – Part ‘C’ shall contain higher-order questions that may test the candidate’s knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. The questions shall be of analytical nature where a candidate is expected to apply scientific knowledge to arrive at the solution to the given scientific problem.  A candidate shall be required to answer any 20 questions. Each question shall be 4.75 marks. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 95 out of 200.
